Belmont residents evacuated after vegetation fire threatened homes

A vegetation fire caused evacuations Monday afternoon in Belmont, authorities said.

The blaze began at 3:44 p.m. and threatened multiple structures. Evacuations were ordered for residents at San Juan Canyon from East Laurel Creek Road to Cipriana Boulevard, according to the Belmont Police Department.

Evacuations were lifted at 9 p.m. Roads may be inaccessible due to the presence of fire engines, according to the police department. Firefighters will be on scene overnight as a precaution.

The fire started at the 2900 block of Alhambra Blvd., a hilly residential area near Laurelwood Park, police said.

By about 5 p.m., the blaze was “doing well” and firefighters had slowed its progress, Belmont police said. By 9 p.m., the fire was extinguished.

There was no immediate information on how the fire started.
