Two home improvement contractors are expanding in Cheektowaga and Clarence, driven by substantial growth of their businesses and especially strong demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Big L Windows and Doors and Cortese Construction Services Corp. are kicking off major projects for their companies, adding new showroom, warehouse, shop and office space.
Cortese, which is constructing an entirely new headquarters, is tripling its physical size.
Big L, which moved its headquarters to Cheektowaga in 1998, has more than doubled its full-time workforce in that time, but has only remodeled and redesigned its 20,000-square-foot space since then, without adding on. That’s no longer enough to accommodate its business, said company president and founder Bill Horbett Sr.
“There was no more room to put anybody,” he said.
Big L distributes windows and doors to consumers, new home builders and commercial general contractors, and also installs windows for consumers, with about 1,500 projects this year. It sells products primarily from Marvin Windows and Doors, a fourth-generation family owned manufacturer in Minnesota.
“All three segments are extremely busy right now,” said Horbett, who founded the company 45 years ago. “It doesn’t always happen that they’re all buying at the same time, but they are right now. It’s been a trend for a couple of years now, and we’re pleasantly surprised that this year has continued that trend.”
