After evaluating multiple safety and travel concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recently announced its intention to move the 8th annual Design & Construction Week, which features the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) to a robust, all-virtual event platform.
While Design & Construction Week was originally scheduled to take place on Feb. 9-11, 2021 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., the new all-virtual DCW 2021 will still take place the week of Feb. 8 with extended programming.
“Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our exhibitors, attendees and the thousands of onsite workers who support the premier event of the residential construction industry, we feel the only prudent course is to make this year’s show a virtual event,” says NAHB chairman

The contractor of the first phase of the Shire Valley Transformation Program (SVTP) canal construction has expressed worry over increased theft of materials and fuel at the construction site.
Conduril has accused its employees of being behind the sad development. The company has since threatened to stop its operations in the area if the trend continues.
The sentiments transpired during stakeholders meeting at Chikwawa Secondary School hall where Shire Valley Transformation Program was giving project progress.
Christopher Mwambeni, Environmental Safeguard Specialist for the program told participants to the meeting that the contractor was worried of vandalism of sign posts by community members and syphoning of fuel by vehicle operators.
“In case they are making loses eventually they will give up, because they can’t continue operating on losses, ” said Mwambeni.
Responding to the concerns, Traditional Authority Kasisi blamed the company for not including his people

Maryland takes over hundreds of Purple Line contracts to continue construction
Posted on October 10, 2020 by [email protected]_84
It is PLTP’s construction contractor, a joint venture led by Texas-based Fluor, that quit over the cost overruns. Maryland officials said they are continuing to negotiate with PLTP over whether the project’s larger $5.6 billion partnership can be saved.
Maryland Transportation Secretary Gregory Slater said the state “officially took over the day-to-day management” of the 16-mile light-rail project through Montgomery and Prince George’s counties Sept. 28. Matthew Pollack, the state’s Purple Line project director, met with subcontractors Sept. 30 “to outline the next steps,” said Erin Henson, spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Henson said it then took time to figure out what work could continue. Most new construction stopped in mid-September, after a Baltimore judge ruled that the contractor had a legal right to quit.
The contracts that the state has assumed include the manufacturing of the light-rail vehicles, the eventual operations and maintenance of the rail line,

Durban – Work on the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) in Pietermaritzburg may be halted as the Msunduzi Municipality needs to find more than R100million to pay for work that is currently under way.
The total value of the work currently under way is valued at around R240m.
The municipality successfully applied to National Treasury for a roll-over of around R90m that had not been used and now needs to raise about R150m from its own internal funds to be able to pay for this work on the Moses Mabhida Road.
It admitted recently that between the months of August and June, the contractors had not been paid.
Last week, administrator of the municipality Scelo Duma stated the municipality was struggling financially.
The project has been plagued by extensive delays and poor spending, which

Contractor Unearths Old Hoboken Bowling Alley During Construction
Posted on October 5, 2020 by [email protected]_84
HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken-based woodworker Anton David came across an interesting sight last week while preparing a corner lot on the city’s main street for an eyeglass store — a wooden bowling alley underground, which he estimated to be about a century old.
David’s company, Avid Handyman, is serving as the general contractor at Fourth and Washington streets, getting ready for Wise Vision to move across the street to that site.
David was pleased with the discovery, since he also owns Hoboken Custom Craft and works with and repurposes old wood.
“We like to preserve the history of Hoboken whenever possible,” Anton said last week. “The City Hall sign [a 6-foot high ‘H’] was made of reclaimed wood from around the area.”
David was successful earlier this year with his

Can city contractors fly political flags at construction sites?
Posted on October 1, 2020 by [email protected]_84
Asked about recent reports of political flags being flown at street construction sites, local governments say it’s contractors’ constitutional right to do so.
Readers have recently reported the presence of Donald Trump flags at street construction sites in both Sioux Falls and Lennox, and asked if there were any regulations around political displays from contractors doing work paid for by local government.
While there was no sign of the Trump flag previously spotted near the intersection of West 41st Street and South Western Avenue on Monday, representatives of both cities said even if there were, there’s no issue.
BryAnn Becker Knecht, a spokesperson for Sioux Falls, said “It is not the practice of the City of Sioux Falls to intrude upon the constitutional rights of any entity or individual with whom it contracts.”
And Nathan Vander Plaats, the city administrator of Lennox said there was no ordinance prohibiting contractors
