Dear Ed: I’m running the numbers for my new bathroom and noticed I can choose between a two-handle “widespread” faucet or a “centerset” faucet. Is there big differences between these types of faucets to help me with my choice?
Ted, New York state
Dear Ted: Centerset faucets are deck mounted with 4 inches between handles. Widespread faucets are made up with separate components and space between handles can be about 8 to 16 inches apart. But, the big difference can be the extra costs between installing a widespread bathroom faucet over a centerset faucet. These costs may determine what style you choose.
Some extra costs to be aware of are: Widespread faucets can be more expensive just to purchase the faucet itself. Also,
I was away for work last week when we got on to the subject of showers. This is something that comes up a lot when travelling, as the quality of bathroom facilities very much determines the mood of the TV shoot. One of the hotels we stayed in last year seemed to be only pretending to have running water, and so the filming days quickly descended into a group of smelly people irritably snapping at each other. At another hotel, it would take about 20 minutes to get a cupful of hot water, which meant showers took an hour and consisted of being naked and freezing and occasionally basting yourself.
On last week’s shoot, though, the director of the show claimed that cold showers were the way forward. I would agree, if the context was specifically for the extraction of information from hostages. I found myself wondering if this was
There’s a world of bathroom sink silhouettes out there (pedestal, under-mount, vessel, bucket), yet when it comes to material, they all tend to be made out of the same thing: slippery white ceramic. It’s easy to clean, sure, and you can’t call it an eyesore, but when was the last time you got excited about the boring basin style? Things are looking up, as this space is experiencing a big change, and—to no one’s shock—it’s partially farmhouse inspired.
We’re currently seeing antique stone sinks pop up in bathrooms and powder rooms everywhere. The go-to choice among designers like Kelly Nutt (see her space, above) appears to be limestone: a durable, readily available (read: cost-effective), and easy-to-clean option. Weighing in at hundreds of pounds, these heavy troughs—whether marble, limestone, or travertine—require a sturdy support system. Nutt cut down the legs of an old console table and used that for her foundation.
Alex Hechart, who grew up in Anniston, recently started a home design service with her mother, Donna Woodfin. Based in Birmingham, “Home with Hechart” offers design services as well as a shopping website for home goods.
The mother-daughter duo offer design services by the hour (for design ideas, party prep or holiday decorating), by the room or by the project.
The online shop, HomeWithHechart.com, features pillows, rugs, mirrors, fireplace screens, ottomans, dressers, lamps, linens, glassware, tableware, gifts and more.
The Star posed 10 questions to the design duo:
Why did y’all decide to start a design business?
Alex: We decided to start Home with Hechart because we’ve always loved decorating and playing around with interior design together. Growing up, we were always redoing our house or sprucing up a room. We would go to furniture stores, and we were always so excited about every project. We knew that we could
Park model mobile homes offer cheap living in price only. The amenities some parks offer make for champagne living on a beer budget.
The term mobile home is misleading. They are usually mobile only once…from factory to park location. For sure, you have seen them in route to their permanent homes. Some are left above grade with skirts applied at the base and stairs built for unit access. Some are placed on slabs and left at grade level.
Do you require a golf course for park residents? No problem…need tennis courts…no problem. More popular now is pickle ball, a game played on a small court with a solid paddle and a wiffle ball.
How cheap is cheap? Glad you asked, some used, furnished park models can be purchased for $15,000. These are models in a very secure park, age restricted, with small pets allowed.
Simplistic designs are as hot as these colors are now. For example, grey shaker cabinets offer a simply style that will compliment a modern look without appearing too flashy. Homeowners that want to stick with these colors should go with this style to make a modern kitchen shine more than ever.
For inspiration, look back on the Shaker movement. This is when the cabinets became more popular than ever, but that is not all that was created. The Shaker movement consisted of all kinds of chairs, etc. based on the belief that less is more. Merely browsing through pictures from the Shaker movement will help give anyone ideas on how to add style while maintaining simplicity.
Contrast is the perfect way to spice up anything. For example, painting a delicate white flower on the door of grey cabinets is an affordable way to add elegance. For homeowners that … Read More

In many ways, bathroom vanities are centerpieces. Stylish sinks and countertops draw attention; they feel inviting, reminiscent of time spent at a spa or luxury hotel. Beauty is important, but beauty alone isn’t enough. A vanity needs to be practical, too.
Study the Space
Whether remodeling a bathroom or choosing fixtures for a new home, a careful study of the given space is important. A vanity that takes up too much space impairs the flow and functionality of the room, but one that’s too small may feel insignificant and prove impractical. Shoppers should find a unit that fits in the allotted space without taking over the room, while still serving as an attractive, useful centerpiece.
Consider the Plumbing
Homeowners may fall in love with a few bathroom vanities only to discover that they’re incompatible with the existing plumbing. This may or may not be a roadblock, depending on the budget … Read More
